Sparkling water machines in Singapore: every type, compared
Every sparkling water machine sold in Singapore is one of three things: a bottle you fizz by hand, a countertop that fizzes for you, or a system plumbed into your kitchen. Get the type right first — the brand matters far less than the category.
Type 1
Manual carbonators
SodaStream, Drinkmate, Aarke · from ~S$130
A CO2 cylinder in a plastic or steel body; you screw on a bottle of cold water and press. No power, no plumbing, sits anywhere. The catch is the ritual: pre-chill the water (warm water fizzes poorly), carbonate, repeat per bottle.
- + Cheapest way in, widely sold in Singapore
- + Cylinder exchange networks are established here
- − Only fizzes water (except Drinkmate)
- − No chilling — the fridge does that part
Type 2
Countertop sparkling dispensers
Tomal, Brita-style units · commonly S$1,500+
Powered machines that chill and carbonate on demand — press a button, get cold fizzy water. Most run from a tank or a mains connection and are common in Singapore offices; home versions are the same idea in a smaller shell.
- + Cold sparkling on demand, no bottle ritual
- + Higher CO2 efficiency than hand units
- − Needs counter space and a power point
- − Mid four-figure prices before servicing
Type 3
Built-in purifier systems
HydroSpark+, Sterra-class units · from ~S$2,988
One water station: reverse-osmosis filtration plus sparkling, cold, ambient and hot from the same unit. The Velta HydroSpark+ runs in tank mode (5 L, no plumbing) or connected to the mains. You’re buying a purifier that also does fizz — not a fizz machine.
- + Filtered, chilled and sparkling from one tap
- + Replaces the purifier you might buy anyway
- − Biggest upfront cost of the three
- − 22 kg of appliance; needs its counter spot
The comparison that actually matters
Ignore brand wars. The three types differ on five practical questions — this table is the whole decision:
| Question | Manual carbonator | Countertop dispenser | Built-in system |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront | ~S$130–350 | ~S$1,500–3,000 | ~S$2,988+ |
| Cost per litre after hardware | ~S$0.45–0.60 | ~S$0.40–0.55 | ~S$0.50–0.65 incl. filters |
| Is it cold? | Only if you pre-chill | Yes, chilled on demand | Yes — plus hot and ambient |
| Is it filtered? | No — tap water in, tap water out | Some models, basic carbon | Yes — reverse osmosis built in |
| Install | None | Power point | Power point; tank or mains water |
How to choose in sixty seconds
Buy a manual carbonator if you drink a few glasses a week and want the cheapest possible exit from bottled water. A SodaStream-class machine plus the local cylinder-exchange run is a solved problem in Singapore. Read the soda maker buyer’s guide before you pick a brand — the cylinder system matters more than the machine.
Buy a countertop dispenser if the bottle ritual is what kills the habit — the pantry-office experience at home. Fewer models are sold retail here; most arrive through office-pantry suppliers, so check servicing before you buy.
Buy a built-in systemif you were going to buy a water purifier anyway. That’s the honest case for the HydroSpark+ class: nobody should spend S$3,000 to make fizzy water, but if an RO purifier is already on the shopping list, sparkling, hot and cold from the same unit collapses two appliances into one. See how it stacks up against the carbonators in SodaStream vs Drinkmate vs HydroSpark+.
Still unsure whether any machine beats just buying bottles? Start with the cost-per-litre arithmetic — for most Singapore households drinking a litre a day, the machine wins by the end of year one.
